The goal-diggers talk a lot about the first quarter. In this first quarter the brand has been building, laying foundations, making plays. Individually, I’ve been doing the same. Reflecting on the kind of year I want for myself and manifesting it before next week ushers in my 29th year of life. This week's list needed to reflect those things. The opulence of a Maybach Music installment to describe the success I see the brand and myself having this year, balanced with the awareness that materialistic things aren’t nearly as important as God, family or the culture. A little shit talking to make it clear that in 2019 you’re about to see the next level of what you’ve already experienced: another year of outworking whoever, with the culture and for the culture.
I’m not really into audiobooks or e-books. There’s something about turning physical pages, and the smell of the pages that takes reading from an activity to an experience for me. But when a friend sent me a link to the audiobook for J. Prince’s new memoir on Apple Music, I decided to give it a spin.
I finished it twice in a week and a half.
Lady Saw’s “Sycamore Tree” and Tanya Stephens’ “You Nuh Ready For Dis Yet” were the staples on my father’s Joy Ride Riddim cassette tape. He would play it in our 1996 Mazda MPV while my siblings and I helped him wash the car. I considered her the Lil Kim of Dancehall because her lyrics were vulgar, raunchy and direct (but it’s worth mentioning that she has since been baptized and now goes by Minister Marion Hall if you want to look her up).
